Curtains beside a room window

Softer daylight for your room

Sheers diffuse daylight as it comes through the window. They can soften a bright living room while you keep the heavier curtains open.

Privacy varies with the fabric and the light on each side of the window. If the room is brighter than outside, people may still be able to see in.

How to choose a sheer

Weave

A more open weave lets more light through and can leave a clearer view into the room.

Colour

Check the colour beside your walls and flooring in daylight.

A second layer

Add night curtains if you need privacy after dark.

Care

Look at the washing or cleaning instructions before choosing a fabric.

Sheer curtain prices

Sheer curtains cost $45 to $60 per metre of track width, installed, for drops up to about 260cm. A 3m BTO living room window comes to about $135 to $180. Small windows carry a minimum of about $100 to $130 per curtain.

Most living rooms pair sheers with a night curtain. Day and night curtains cost $110 to $140 per metre, so the same 3m window is about $330 to $420. Prices below exclude track; a new double track adds $26 to $40 per metre.

If you are furnishing a whole flat, compare these with our HDB curtain packages, which start at $378 for a 2-room flat with dim-out night curtains, and ask us to add sheers to the rooms that need them.

Sheer fabrics and how they behave

Sheers range from fine voiles you can see through clearly to heavier textured weaves that blur the view. In a flat facing another block, a heavier weave gives more daytime privacy while still letting light in.

Care matters in a humid flat. Sheers close to the glass can catch condensation from aircon and show mould spots along the hem. Open them on dry days and wash them according to the care label. Many polyester sheers can be rehung slightly damp, so the creases drop out as they dry.

  • Linen-look sheersSlubby texture that softens light and hides creases. Common in Japandi and Scandinavian rooms.
  • Polyester sheersKeep their shape in humid air and wash easily.
  • Cotton sheersMatt and soft. Can shrink in a hot wash, so follow the label.
  • ColourWhite glows brightest, ivory and oatmeal look warmer under evening lights, grey cuts glare.
  • Curtain cleaningWe take sheers down, clean them and rehang them.

Day and night curtains on a double track

A double track holds two curtains that open and close separately. By day you close the sheer and leave the night curtain stacked at the sides. After dark you close both.

The night layer can be dim-out or blackout. Living rooms usually take dim-out and bedrooms blackout. Both curtains need room to stack back off the glass, so the track should run past the window on each side.

Motors are $290 to $450 per window. Tell us whether you want one layer or both motorised, so power and track type can be planned together.

Headings and length for sheer curtains

Light fabric shows its folds more than heavy fabric, so the heading changes the look of a sheer more than it does a blackout curtain.

Floor-length sheers make a window look taller. Finish them just above the floor so the hem stays clean when you mop. Sill-length sheers suit bedroom and kitchen windows above furniture.

  • Ripple foldEven waves from top to hem. The usual choice for full-height sheers.
  • Pinch pleatTighter, tailored folds for classic rooms.
  • EyeletA relaxed look on a rod. Suits a single sheer layer.
  • Pencil pleatA gathered top that suits light voiles on standard tracks.

Where sheer curtains work

Sheer curtains suit most rooms where you want daylight without the view straight in. They do least in rooms used mainly at night, and in kitchens, where steam and grease mark light fabric quickly and a blind is easier to keep clean.

In a condo with full-height glass, sheers across the whole wall make the room look calmer than separate panels at each window. In a BTO, a sheer on the living room window and the service yard door is a common pairing.

  • Living roomSheers across the full wall soften glare on the TV and give daytime privacy from the next block.
  • BedroomA sheer under a blackout curtain keeps daylight in without opening up to the corridor.
  • Dining roomSoftens harsh light over the table at lunch.
  • StudyCuts screen glare. Pair with a blind for more control at the desk.
  • Balcony doorsSheers inside the sliding door, with an outdoor zip blind outside for rain and sun.

Frequently asked questions

Will sheers give me privacy at night?

They may leave the room visible when your lights are on and it is darker outside. Use a heavier curtain as a second layer for evening privacy.

Do sheers block daylight?

They filter some light. How much gets through depends on the weave and fabric, so compare options based on how bright you want the room.

Can I pair sheers with blackout curtains?

Yes. Sheers filter daylight while the blackout layer is open. Close the blackout layer when you want a darker room or more privacy.

Are the sheers made to my window size?

Yes. The width and length are made to the agreed measurements. You can also discuss the heading and where the curtains should end.

How much do day curtains cost?

The price depends on the window size, fabric and fitting work. Let us know if you also need a second layer so the quote can cover it.
