Cotton curtains in Singapore
Cotton curtains are soft, breathable and take dye well, so prints and warm colours look rich and homely. They suit bedrooms, children's rooms and casual living spaces. In Singapore, cotton needs a little more planning than polyester because it can shrink, fade and hold moisture.

Cotton fibres tighten when washed in warm water or dried with heat. A full-length curtain that loses even a small amount in length can end up hovering above the floor. Washing cold, on a gentle cycle, and hanging to dry keeps this to a minimum.
If you plan to wash cotton curtains at home often, a cotton-polyester blend keeps most of the softness and shrinks far less. Tell us at the measuring visit how you intend to clean them, so we can suggest a fabric that matches.

Fading and moisture
Cotton fades faster than polyester in direct sun. The part of the curtain facing the glass when drawn fades first, which you may notice only when the panels are fully open. A lining protects the cotton face on east- and west-facing windows.
Cotton absorbs moisture and dries slowly, so it is more prone to mould in rooms that stay closed or where aircon condensation forms on the glass. Open cotton curtains fully every day, and avoid them in bathrooms, kitchens and damp service yards.

Where cotton suits best
Cleaning cotton curtains
Unlined cotton panels can usually go in a home machine on a cold, gentle cycle with the hooks removed. Hang them to dry in moving air, out of harsh midday sun, and rehang them only when the seams and hem feel fully dry. Lined cotton, or cotton with a blackout backing, is safer with professional cleaning because the face and lining may shrink at different rates. Our curtain cleaning service takes lined curtains down and rehangs them.

Common questions
Do cotton curtains shrink?
They can, especially in warm water or a dryer. Wash cold and line dry, or choose a cotton-polyester blend if you plan to wash them often.
Are cotton curtains good for Singapore?
Yes, in well-ventilated bedrooms and living rooms. Avoid them in damp rooms, and line them on sunny windows to reduce fading.
Is cotton or linen better for curtains?
Cotton is softer and takes colour better. Linen has more texture and a looser drape. Both absorb moisture, so both need airflow in Singapore.
Can I add blackout lining to cotton curtains?
Yes. A sewn-in or detachable blackout lining works well behind cotton and protects it from sun.
