Korean-style curtains

The Korean apartment look is easy to recognise: cream walls, a pale sofa and sheers running from ceiling to floor, glowing in the afternoon sun. In Singapore it suits a condo living room with full-height glass or an HDB flat facing another block, where you want daylight in without being on show. Curtains SG makes these layered curtains to measure, with a sheer you see by day and a heavier curtain behind it for the evening.

What gives the Korean look its softness

Three things do most of the work. The curtain starts at the ceiling, so the window looks taller than it is. The fabric is light in colour and light in weight, usually a cream or ivory voile. And there is plenty of fullness, so the sheer falls in deep, even waves instead of hanging flat.

Because the sheer is the part everyone sees, the quality of the voile is noticeable. A slightly textured or linen-look sheer softens the light more evenly than a thin, shiny one.

Wave fold on a ceiling track

In many BTO flats the window stops well short of the ceiling. We fix the track to the ceiling a little in front of the window so the sheer covers the wall above it, which makes an ordinary window look full height.

Ceiling-mounted trackFixing the track to the ceiling, or into a curtain pelmet, hides the hardware and lets the fabric drop in one line. Wave fold needs a track with carriers, so it will not work on a standard rod.Learn more →
Wave or ripple fold headingThe carriers are spaced evenly, so the curtain forms regular S-curves whether it is open or closed. This is the heading behind most Korean-style photos.
Generous fullnessMore fabric across the width gives deeper waves. Skimping on fullness is the most common reason a sheer looks thin and flat once it is up.
Just-off-floor hemSheers are usually finished about a centimetre above the floor so they hang straight and do not drag. A short puddle is possible, but it gathers dust quickly.

Day and night on a double track

A double track takes two curtains: a sheer for daytime and a dim-out or blackout curtain for night. For the Korean look, many homes put the sheer on the room side so it is always the visible layer, with the night curtain closer to the glass. Drawn at night, you see the sheer over a solid backing, which keeps the room soft while giving privacy.

Keep the two layers in close tones, such as an ivory sheer over a warm beige or light grey night curtain. A strong contrast behind a sheer shows through and breaks up the pale look. Both tracks can be motorised if the window is wide or high.

Cream, ivory and warm white

Cream and ivory give the warm glow the style is known for. Pure white can look slightly blue in the shade and shows dust sooner. On a west-facing window, a very sheer fabric will let a lot of afternoon heat through, so a denser voile or the night curtain drawn halfway helps on hot days.

Pale sheers do collect dust and city grime over time, especially near a road or construction site. Our curtain cleaning service can take them down, wash them and rehang them, or clean on site.

Korean combi blinds for smaller windows

Combi blinds do not give full blackout, because light passes through the sheer bands and the gaps at the sides. For a bedroom that needs to be dark, pair one with a blackout curtain or choose a blackout roller blind instead.

How combi blinds workA Korean combi (zebra) blind has alternating sheer and solid bands. Line them up for a soft filtered view, or offset them to close the gaps.Learn more →
Where they fit better than curtainsBedroom windows beside a bed, study windows over a desk and kitchen windows, where a full curtain would get in the way.
Matching the curtainsChoose a combi blind in cream or beige so it sits with the sheers in the living room and the whole flat reads as one style.

Question 1 of 5
Which room would you most like to live in?

Common questions

Are Korean curtains the same as Korean combi blinds?

No. Korean-style curtains are soft sheers and night curtains on a track. Korean combi blinds are roller blinds with alternating sheer and solid bands. Many homes use curtains in the living room and combi blinds in bedrooms or the kitchen.

Will a sheer give me privacy at night?

Not on its own. When the lights are on inside and it is dark outside, people can see shapes through a sheer. Add a dim-out or blackout curtain on a second track for night privacy.

Can I get wave fold on my existing curtain rod?

Wave fold needs a track with evenly spaced carriers, so a rod will not give the same even folds. We can replace the rod with a ceiling or wall-mounted track during installation.

Will cream sheers turn yellow?

Light fabrics in strong sun can discolour slowly over years, and dust makes them look dull sooner. Regular cleaning keeps them bright, and a lined night curtain behind cuts the direct sun on the sheer.

Can the double track be motorised?

Yes. Each track can have its own motor, run by remote, wall switch or phone app. Tell us before installation so we can plan for power at the window.
