Pencil pleat curtains in Singapore
Pencil pleat curtains have a gathered heading made by pulling cords in a tape sewn along the top, creating tight, narrow folds that look like a row of pencils. The look is soft and casual. They work on a standard track or a rod, which suits bedrooms, children's rooms and windows where you want to keep existing hardware.
Get a quoteHow the heading works
A strip of heading tape with draw cords is sewn across the top of the curtain. Pulling the cords gathers the fabric into closely packed folds, and hooks slot into pockets in the tape. Because the gathering is adjustable, the same curtain can be eased to fit a slightly different track width.
Pencil pleat usually needs a fuller curtain than pinch pleat to look right, often around 2.5x the track width. Lighter fabrics gather more neatly than thick ones.

Pencil pleat is one of the easier headings to wash at home. Untie the cords, ease the gathers flat, remove the hooks and wash according to the fabric's label. After drying, pull the cords back to the track width and tie them off neatly so the loose ends do not hang down.
That flat-when-loosened tape also helps with ironing. Natural fabrics such as cotton should be washed cold, as any shrinkage shows quickly in a gathered heading.

Limits to know
The gathered folds are less even than ripple fold and less structured than pinch pleat, so the look is informal. Heavy fabrics such as velvet bunch awkwardly in pencil pleat tape. The stack is fairly bulky because of the high fullness. If you want a crisp, tailored look, compare pinch pleat first.

Common questions
What is pencil pleat?
A gathered heading made with tape and draw cords that pulls fabric into narrow, tightly packed folds along the top of the curtain.
Can pencil pleat curtains go on a track?
Yes. They use standard hooks that fit glider tracks, and they also work on a rod with rings.
Are pencil pleat curtains easy to wash?
Yes. Loosen the cords to flatten the heading, wash as the label allows, then re-gather to the track width.
How much fabric does pencil pleat need?
Usually more than pinch pleat, often around 2.5x the track width. The curtain calculator shows how fullness changes the fabric needed.
