Curtain alterations we do

Most alterations start with measuring the curtain where it hangs, so the new length matches your track, floor and windows.

Shortening and hemmingWe take curtains up to the length you want, usually about 1cm above the floor, and sew a proper hem so they hang straight.
Ready-made curtainsIKEA, Nitori, Spotlight and online curtains often come too long for Singapore ceilings. We shorten them and can put up the track or rod to hang them.
Curtains from your old flatAfter a move, curtains rarely fit the new windows. We check whether they can be shortened or adjusted, and tell you plainly when new curtains make more sense.
Lined and blackout curtainsTwo-layer and coated curtains need the face fabric and lining handled separately so neither shows or pulls. We check the construction before quoting.

Measuring for the right length

The finished length is measured from the track or rod to where the hem should stop, at the left, middle and right of each window, because floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. Most curtains in Singapore homes look best about 1cm above the floor, which keeps the hem clear of dust and mopping.

If you are not sure how long your curtains should be, our curtain length guide explains sill, floor and floor-to-ceiling lengths, and the curtain length calculator works out the drop from your track height.

When to alter and when to replace

Shortening works well when the curtains are in good condition and only the length is wrong. If they are too short, too narrow to close, faded, mouldy or the wrong type for the room, altering them will not fix the problem. In that case we can measure for new made-to-measure curtains at the same visit.

Common questions

Do you shorten curtains?

Yes. We shorten and hem curtains, including ready-made curtains from IKEA and online shops, and curtains moved from another flat. Send photos and the length you want for a quote.

Can you shorten blackout or lined curtains?

Usually, yes. The lining and face fabric are shortened separately so the hem sits flat. Coated blackout fabric needs careful sewing, so we check it first.

Can you shorten curtains without taking down the track?

Yes. The curtains come off the track or rod for sewing and go back up afterwards. The track stays where it is unless you want it moved.

Is it better to shorten or buy new curtains?

If the fabric is in good condition and only the length is wrong, shortening is usually simpler. If the curtains are also too narrow, faded or mouldy, new made-to-measure curtains are often better value.
