Less light when you want to rest
Morning light can wake you earlier than you want. Blackout curtains reduce light passing through the fabric, so they can help you darken a bedroom during the day.
Light can still enter around the edges. The curtain width and track position need attention too, especially if you want the room as dark as possible.

The fit affects the darkness
Blackout fabric is only part of the answer. A curtain that ends short or leaves an exposed edge can let in enough light to bother you. We consider the window coverage when discussing the fit.
- Width
- Allow enough coverage at the sides of the window.
- Top edge
- Consider where the track sits above the window.
- Length
- Agree where the curtain ends and check the gap below it.

Blackout curtain prices
Blackout curtains are priced per metre of track width, installed, for drops up to about 260cm. Most of the difference between quotes comes from the fabric and whether you add a second layer.
For a BTO master bedroom window of about 2.4m, blackout curtains cost about $180 to $240. Add sheers on a double track and it becomes day and night curtains at about $264 to $336, plus the double track if you need a new one.
Our HDB curtain packages use dim-out night curtains. If you want blackout in the bedrooms, ask us to price the upgrade with the package.
| Option | Installed price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dim-out | $60 to $80 per m | A soft glow comes through |
| Blackout | $75 to $100 per m | Stops light through the cloth |
| Day and night | $110 to $140 per m | Sheer plus a night layer |
| Single room night curtain | $199 | Package price |
| New double track | $26 to $40 per m | Needed for two layers |
| Motor | $290 to $450 per window | Remote, switch or app |

Blackout or dim-out?
Dim-out fabric cuts most light and gives privacy day and night, but the room still feels like daytime with it closed. Blackout fabric stops light passing through the cloth itself. That matters if you sleep in, work shifts, or have a baby who naps after lunch.
Many households use blackout in the bedrooms and dim-out in the living room, where some daylight with the curtains closed is welcome.

West sun and heat
West-facing HDB and condo windows take strong afternoon sun. A closed blackout curtain stops much of that light before it reaches the room, which keeps sofas and flooring out of direct sun and can make the room feel cooler.
A thermal lining adds a layer behind the face fabric. It suits west-facing windows, and it lets you choose a lighter face fabric that matches the room while the lining blocks the light.
Lined curtains are heavier, so they need a sturdy track and enough brackets. We check the ceiling and fixing points at the measuring visit.

Blackout curtains room by room
The darkest result is rarely needed in every room. Match the fabric to how each room is used.
In an HDB bedroom, the window often sits close to a wall or wardrobe, so there is little room for the curtain to stack when open. We plan the track length and stack side at the visit, so the blackout layer clears the glass in the day and still covers the edges at night.
Colour is a matter of taste here. Pale blackout fabrics block light as well as dark ones when the fabric or lining is made for it, so you can keep a bright bedroom by day.
- Master bedroomFloor-length blackout on a ceiling track, with sheers on a double track for daytime.
- Kids' and baby roomBlackout for daytime naps. Keep cords and chains out of reach.
- Living or media roomBlackout behind a TV or projector wall, dim-out where you want a softer room.
- Study or guest roomUsually dim-out, unless the room doubles as a bedroom.
- Shift worker's bedroomA blackout curtain with a blackout roller blind behind it gives the darkest result.

Fitting details that keep light out
Light gets in at three places: above the track, at the sides, and under the hem. Each has a fix that costs little if it is planned before the curtains are made.
Top: a ceiling-mounted track, or a track inside a curtain box, leaves little gap above the curtain. A wall track fixed just above the window frame lets light spill over the top.
Sides: run the track well past the frame on both sides, so the closed curtain overlaps the wall. Where two curtains meet in the middle, extra width lets them overlap instead of just touching.
Bottom: floor-length curtains block more light than sill-length ones. Where a sill-length curtain is needed above a bed or desk, a blackout roller blind inside the window reveal covers the gap.
If you have tracks already, send us photos. A track that sits too close to the frame, or stops short of it, is often the reason a room stays bright with blackout curtains closed.

Frequently asked questions
Will blackout curtains make my room completely dark?
They reduce light through the fabric. Gaps around the top, sides and bottom can still let light in, so complete darkness depends on the fitting and the room.
Can I use blackout curtains with sheers?
Yes. Keep the blackout layer open when you want filtered daylight, then close it for more darkness and privacy. The tracks need room for both layers.
Do blackout curtains have to be dark in colour?
No. Light blocking depends on the fabric's construction or lining. Ask about the fabric's light-blocking properties when you compare options.
How much will they cost?
Window size, fabric and fitting work affect the price. Share your room details so we can discuss a quote for your windows.
