Linen or Polyester Curtains in Singapore Humidity?

You saw linen in a landed living room and now you want that look in your HDB. The fold is real. So is Singapore humidity. Meteorological Service Singapore puts mean annual relative humidity around 82 percent, with mornings often above 90 percent and dry afternoons nearer 60 percent. I pick the cloth by the room, not by a mood board.

What linen means on a quote

Linen on a Singapore curtain quote can mean three cloths. I make the seller say which one.

  • Pure linen is flax. It has a slub and a fold that never sits dead flat. It creases when you draw it, and it will show water marks if a window ledge sweats.
  • A linen-polyester blend is the usual linen look I am handed. Some flax for the slub, a lot of polyester for stability.
  • A polyester woven or printed to look like linen has no flax. Fine if you like the colour. Do not pay a linen price for it.

Ask for the composition on the sample card, not the collection name. Belgian linen on a hang tag is marketing until I see the fibre list.

Polyester and blends in humid rooms

Polyester does not drink water the way flax does. In a shut, air-conditioned bedroom, that is a feature. The cloth stays a more even length and is less likely to sit damp against the glass after a thunderstorm.

Cheap polyester looks plasticky. A heavier weave with a proper lining loses that shine. I would rather hang a good polyester in an HDB common bedroom than a thin pure linen you will hate in August.

Blends sit in the middle. Enough flax to break the light, enough polyester to survive a shut room.

Mould is a room problem first. If the ledge stays wet, or the room is a household shelter with poor airflow, linen holds that damp longer than polyester.

I look for a sour smell at the hem and speckles on the lining near the glass. Open the curtain after a wet night. Wipe the stool.

How each cloth hangs

Packaged beige eyelet curtains beside the same pair hung on a rod over a bedroom window.

Linen has movement. After a week of drawing, you will see creases at the stack. Some people want that.

Polyester hangs straighter. A wave heading on polyester looks even. Pinch pleat on linen will soften.

Wrinkle is not a defect in linen. If you want a knife-sharp stack, do not buy pure linen.

Length can shift after a wet week. I check the hem after the first real rain. I do not invent a millimetre figure I have not measured on your window.

Sheer linen is a day curtain, not a night cloth. If you want both looks, hang two rails.

Line it if you use it at night

Linen for night use is a lining conversation. The face can stay linen or a blend. The back gets a lining that cuts morning light.

A blackout curtain can be a blackout face, or a normal face with a blackout lining. For linen I almost always line.

Unlined linen at night on a corridor-facing bedroom is a see-through problem. The lining changes the hang. Say if you care more about the fold or more about the dark.

In a household shelter bedroom I am slower to specify pure linen. A lined polyester or a blend is the cloth I would hang unless you air the room.

Also bring how you use the window, whether the ledge stays wet, and the fibre list on the sample card.

Made-to-measure is how we record drop and stack. Ready-made linen panels are usually a look-alike in a set size.
