Acoustic and Soundproof Curtains in Singapore: Do They Help in an HDB?

Acoustic curtains in Singapore are heavy, lined curtains that absorb echo inside the room and soften mid and high sounds coming through the window, such as voices and tyre hiss. They do not soundproof a bedroom, and they work best on a closed, well-sealed window with a track that lets the cloth cover the whole frame.

Your HDB bedroom faces a road, a void deck, or a neighbour who keeps the TV on late. You want the room quieter at 11pm. A heavier lined curtain can take the edge off voices, corridor noise, and traffic hiss. It will not soundproof the room. Ask for acoustic curtains if you want damping, not silence.

Are soundproof curtains in Singapore really soundproof?

Most buyers who type acoustic curtains singapore want the bedroom to feel quieter. Acoustic cloth absorbs sound already in the room. It also takes the sharpness off voices, corridor chatter, and tyre hiss coming through the window.

Soundproofing needs mass, a sealed air gap, and a closed path through glass, gasket, wall, and door. A curtain has none of that.

I have not measured your bedroom. I will not invent a decibel drop. If a seller quotes a lab number, ask whether they tested absorption or transmission.

How acoustic curtains reduce noise in an HDB flat

HDB bedrooms are hard boxes. Concrete walls, tile floors, a casement or sliding window.

Sound bounces. A thin unlined panel does almost nothing.

A dense lined pair does two practical things:

  • It soaks up some echo, so the TV and your own voice stop slapping off the wall.
  • It covers the glass with more mass and more folds, so mid and high sound loses bite.

There is lab evidence for this. A National University of Singapore study of acoustic curtain fabrics found PVC-coated polyester insulated better than pure PVC sheets, mostly in the mid-to-high frequency range, and that multi-layer curtains outperformed single layers. Those were fabric samples tested in a lab, not a curtain hung in a flat, so treat them as direction rather than a promise.

Coverage matters more than the name on the fabric. Track close to the ceiling. Hem just off the floor.

Stack wide enough that the glass disappears. Return to the wall if the window sits in a recess.

Layer a day curtain or sheer for the day. Draw the heavy night panel after dinner.

What it will not replace

Buses, lorries, and a neighbour’s subwoofer still come through a single pane. A working gasket and better glass do more for the bass than any cloth I can sew.

Gaps leak. Light at the sides is a sound path. Neighbour noise through a shared wall is structure.

A household shelter already has thick walls. A curtain helps the glass. It does nothing for the blast door gap.

Other ways to soundproof HDB windows

If road noise is the main complaint, start with the window itself and treat the curtain as the last layer. Check the rubber seals on the casement or sliding panels. A perished gasket or a sash that no longer closes tight lets in more noise than any fabric can stop. Shut the window fully at night when the air-con is on.

Next comes the glass. Thicker or laminated glass, or a second inner window, does the heavy work against bus and lorry rumble. That is a window contractor’s job, so check HDB’s rules on window works with them before you commit.

Inside the room, soft surfaces cut echo. A rug, an upholstered headboard and a full bookshelf all absorb some sound. A door draught strip helps when the noise comes from the corridor rather than the road.

Once the window is as good as you can make it, a heavy acoustic curtain closes the gap that is left: the hard glass surface and the light, sharp sounds that still get through.

What makes a good sound-absorbing curtain

White ceiling curtain track with gliders and hooks holding a textured beige heading.

I look for a dense face cloth: heavy polyester, velvet, or a tight dimout. Lining adds mass. Interlining is a third layer for a noise brief.

Blackout curtains are a light job. Acoustic is a sound job. You can have both in one panel if we line it that way.

Fullness matters more than a thicker name. Most HDB slabs sit around 2.6m. I have not measured yours.

A heavy pair needs an aluminium curtain track, ceiling-fixed if the slab is clear. Shelter rooms follow SCDF and HDB rules: drill not more than 50mm, non-metallic inserts, removable screws, and fixtures down within 48 hours if you must clear the shelter. Ferrolite walls: stay 200mm off the ceiling or beam, and keep drill depth around 22mm.

Are heavy velvet curtains soundproof?

Velvet is one of the better face fabrics for an acoustic curtain, because the dense pile and the weight absorb more sound than a thin weave. A heavy velvet curtain on its own still does not soundproof a room. It softens echo and takes the sharpness off voices and traffic hiss, the same as any dense lined curtain.

For a noise brief, line the velvet and add interlining, make it full height with generous fullness, and run the track past both sides of the frame. Velvet also blocks light well, so one panel can double as the night curtain. The pile collects dust and usually needs professional cleaning rather than home washing, so factor that in. Our velvet curtains page explains where it suits.

Acoustic curtains or acoustic blinds?

A blind sits flat against the window, so it has little depth and few folds to absorb sound. A heavy roller or blind in a dense fabric can take some glare and a little echo off the glass, but it will not match a lined, full curtain for noise. Blinds also leave a gap at each side of the frame.

If you want both, hang a blind inside the recess for daytime light and a heavy acoustic curtain on a ceiling track in front of it for the night. The two layers trap a pocket of air between them, which helps a little more than either one alone.

For a bedroom that faces a road, I would put the budget into the curtain first. For a study where you mainly want to cut screen glare, a blind may be enough.

Step What to write
1 Name the noise: bus stop, corridor talk, echo on Zoom, or wall thump.
2 Window type: casement, sliding, or full-height door. Say if the room is a household shelter.
3 Face cloth: dense. If the sample feels like a shirt, skip it.
4 Lining, plus interlining if the brief is noise. Add blackout lining if you also want a dark 7am.
5 Full height. Track past both sides of the frame. Centre overlap. Return to the wall if the recess allows.
6 Aluminium track that can carry the stack. Replace a tired plastic rail.

Common questions

Do acoustic curtains actually work?

Yes, within limits. A heavy lined curtain absorbs echo and softens voices, corridor chatter and traffic hiss. It does little against low rumble from buses or a neighbour’s subwoofer, which needs better glass and sealing.

Do acoustic curtains soundproof an HDB bedroom?

No. They damp mid and high sound and they cut echo. Bus rumble and wall noise also need the window seal, the glass, and the door.

Are soundproof curtains different from blackout curtains?

On a shop tag, often no. Blackout is light. Acoustic is absorption plus a bit of transmission loss. I can line one panel for both.

Can I put acoustic curtains in a household shelter bedroom?

Yes, if the room has a window. Keep the track shallow and removable. The blast door stays as it is.

Which curtains are best for soundproofing?

Look for a dense face fabric such as heavy polyester or velvet, with lining and ideally interlining behind it. Make the curtain full height with generous fullness, and run the track past both sides of the frame. Coverage and weight do more than the label on the fabric.

How can I soundproof my HDB windows in Singapore?

Start with the window: replace tired seals, make sure the sash closes tight, and ask a window contractor about thicker or laminated glass. Then add a heavy lined curtain on a ceiling track to absorb what still comes through. Check HDB’s rules on window works before any glass is changed.

How do I soundproof a room cheaply?

Close the gaps first. Fix door draught strips and window seals, add a rug and soft furnishings, and move the bed away from the noisiest wall. A lined curtain is the next step if the window is still the weak point.

How much do acoustic curtains cost?

It depends on the window size, the fabric, the lining layers and the track. We quote after a home measuring visit. The $50 deposit for the visit is credited to your order.
