A smart curtain in Singapore is a curtain on a motorised track that opens and closes by remote, app, timer or voice. It suits wide, heavy or full-height windows, and rooms where someone should not have to drag a lined pair.
You want the drape to open without walking to the glass. Plan the fabric, the motor track and the power point together, ideally before the pelmet is closed up. It is not a motorised blind. The cloth, the heading, and the rail still have to fit the window. For the wider renovation plan (which windows get a motor, wired or battery, pelmet depth), see our guide to motorised blinds and curtains. This page stays with the curtain itself.
What a smart curtain is in Singapore
A curtain is cloth on a track. The motor sits on that track and pulls the carriers. You still choose a face fabric, a lining, a heading, and a stack.
Blackout or a lined night pair for sleep. A sheer on a second rail if you want glare control.
A blind is a different product. If the window is a wet kitchen, a tight reveal, or a bathroom, ask for a blind.
Motorised means the rail has a motor and a remote or a wall switch. Smart means that motor can also talk to an app, a schedule, or a home system. You can have motorised without smart.
Full motorised track or a retrofit curtain robot
Two different products are sold as smart curtains in Singapore, and a shop listing does not always say which one you are looking at.
A motorised track replaces the rail. The motor sits at one end and a belt inside the track pulls the carriers, so both curtains travel evenly. It takes a lined night curtain, a long run, or a ceiling-mounted double track with a sheer behind. It has to be installed, and the curtain heading has to suit the track’s carriers.
A retrofit curtain robot is a small battery unit that clips onto the rod or track you already have and pushes the leading edge of the curtain along. Some charge from a small solar panel stuck to the glass. There is no new rail and no drilling, which suits renters and a light curtain on a straight run.
The limits show up with weight and friction. A heavy blackout pair, stiff gliders, a bend in the track or a centre bracket on a rod can stall a robot or leave the curtain half open. A centre-opening pair usually needs two units, one per side. For full-height glass in a main bedroom, a motorised track is the steadier choice.
When a smart curtain makes sense

A normal aluminium track is hand-draw. That is still the sensible choice for most HDB bedroom casements.
I specify a motor when the run is wide, the cloth is heavy, the glass is full height, or the person using the room should not drag a lined pair. You can motor the night pair and leave the sheer hand-draw. Do not buy a motor for a window you already open on the way to the kettle.
Existing curtains can move onto a motorised rail only if the heading matches and the weight is inside the motor’s rating. Eyelets want a rod.
Smart curtain controls: remote, app, voice and hubs
Ask what is in the box. A handheld remote is the baseline. An app helps if you want a schedule you will actually use, such as closing the west-facing living room curtains before the afternoon sun.
In Singapore I see Somfy on a lot of curtain rails, and I see Dooya and A-OK specified by local shops. I will not invent a market share. Write the brand and the model on the quote.
Some motors need a hub for Google, Alexa, or HomeKit. Get the hub name, and whether it is included.
The label on the box tells you what else you need. A Wi-Fi motor joins your router directly. A Zigbee motor talks to a hub or gateway, which then connects to the app. An RF motor works with its own remote and needs a bridge before a phone or speaker can drive it. Matter is a newer standard meant to let one device work across Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, but only where both the motor and your hub support it. Choose the motor to suit the system you already use.
Ask who programs the open and close limits. Ask what still works when the wifi drops. I do not invent battery months or noise figures for a motor I have not run in your pelmet.
The motor is only as good as the rail. A motorised track is a specific section the motor can drive. A made-to-measure night pair with lining is a different load from a voile.
Power in HDB and condo rooms
Power is usually battery, a plug near the window, or a point the ID left in the pelmet. HDB bedrooms often have no spare socket at the box.
A battery motor avoids a new point. You will still charge it.
Shelter bedrooms follow SCDF and HDB rules: shallow, removable, non-metallic inserts, not more than 50mm. Ferrolite walls: about 22mm drill depth, and stay off the 200mm strip under the beam.
A standard internal curtain rail still does not need an HDB renovation permit. Adding a power point might. Decide power on the measure.

| Step | What to write |
|---|---|
| 1 | Fabric first: night pair, sheer, or both. Lining, heading, stack direction. |
| 2 | Type: full motorised track, or a retrofit robot on the existing rod or track. |
| 3 | Drive: remote, wall switch, app, schedule, or voice. Bring an existing Somfy remote if you have one. |
| 4 | Power: battery you will charge, a plug you accept seeing, or a pelmet point. |
| 5 | Motor rating vs cloth weight. Ask what they last hung on that model. |
| 6 | Rail built for the motor. Hand-draw aluminium is not a motor track. |
| 7 | Shelter, ferrolite wall, or closed gypsum pelmet. Those change the fix. |
| 8 | Brand, model, hub or bridge, who sets the limits, and what works when the mesh drops. Get the warranty path in writing. |
I will not quote a dollar figure here. Width, cloth, motor, power, and bends move the number.
Common questions
How do you automate a curtain?
Either replace the rail with a motorised track, or clip a retrofit robot onto the rod or track you already have. The motorised track is the sturdier option for heavy, wide or full-height curtains. A robot suits a light curtain on a straight run where you cannot drill or add a power point.
How much do smart curtains cost in Singapore?
It depends on the width, the fabric and lining, the motor brand, the power arrangement and any bends in the track, so we do not publish a single figure. Ask each supplier to list the motor model, track, hub and installation as separate lines so you can compare quotes. Our curtain calculator helps you work out the fabric side first.
What are the best smart curtains?
There is no single best motor. A good match carries your curtain’s weight, runs on a track built for it, and works with the app or speaker you already use. Ask the installer what they last hung on that model and who sets the open and close limits.
Can I make my existing curtains smart?
Often, yes. A retrofit robot can work with the curtains and rod or track you have, provided the curtain is light and slides freely. Moving existing curtains onto a motorised track works only if the heading suits the carriers and the weight is within the motor’s rating.
Do smart curtains still work if the Wi-Fi drops?
A motor with a handheld remote or wall switch usually still answers to those, and loses app and voice control until the network is back. Confirm this for the exact model on your quote. Our motorised blinds and curtains guide covers power cuts and manual backup.
