Dim-out curtains in Singapore

Dim-out curtains reduce daylight a lot without stopping it, so a room goes noticeably dimmer and glare disappears, but you can still see your way around without switching on the lights. They suit living rooms, studies and rooms that do not face direct morning sun. We supply them made to measure as a single fabric or as a lining behind your chosen face fabric.

How dim-out differs from blackout

Blackout fabric is designed to stop light passing through the cloth. Dim-out lets some through, and the fabric often glows slightly when the sun hits it. There is no fixed industry line between the two, and one supplier's dim-out can be darker than another's. The reliable test is to hold the actual sample up against your own window at the time of day that bothers you.

Dim-out fabrics are usually lighter, softer and come in a wider range of colours and textures than blackout fabric, which can feel stiffer.

Dim-out fabric or dim-out lining

A dim-out fabric does the job in one layer and keeps the curtain lighter on the track. A dim-out lining sits behind a face fabric of your choice, so you can have linen, cotton or a print on the room side while the lining cuts the light and protects the face from fading.

Lined curtains hang fuller and look more finished, but they weigh more and stack a little wider when open.

Checking the sample at home

Look at the sample at the hour the sun is strongest on that window, from inside the room with the lights off. If you can read comfortably and the glare is gone, dim-out is enough. If you are trying to sleep past sunrise, it probably is not. The sun glare checker helps you see when direct sun reaches each side of your block.

Question 1 of 5
Which room is this for?

Common questions

Are dim-out curtains dark enough for sleeping?

For some people in rooms without direct morning sun, yes. Light sleepers and east-facing bedrooms usually need blackout.

Do dim-out curtains give privacy at night?

Yes, most dim-out fabrics stop people seeing in once the lights are on, unlike sheers.

Do dim-out curtains reduce heat?

They block a good share of direct sun, which helps comfort near the window. They do not cool the room, and we do not quote temperature drops.

Can I add a dim-out lining to existing curtains?

Often, either sewn in or hung on its own hooks. It depends on the heading and the condition of the curtains.
