Velvet curtains in Singapore
Velvet curtains have a dense pile that gives deep colour, a soft sheen and a heavy, formal drape. They suit a living room, study or bedroom where you want a warmer, darker feel. In Singapore's humidity, polyester velvet is the easier choice, and the track needs to be chosen for the weight.
Get a quotePolyester velvet or cotton velvet
Cotton velvet has a matte, rich pile and a classic look, but it absorbs moisture, takes longer to dry and is more prone to mould in a damp room. It also feels warm to sit beside on a humid afternoon.
Polyester velvet looks very similar, keeps its colour better in sun and copes with humidity more easily. For most Singapore homes it is the practical choice if you want the velvet look. Both types crush and mark if pressed, so they suit windows where the curtain is not constantly brushed past.

Weight, tracks and stacking
Velvet is heavy, and a full-height lined velvet curtain on a wide window is heavier still. A slim decorative rod on two end brackets can bow in the middle over time. A sturdy ceiling track fixed at short intervals spreads the load, and for long runs a motorised track makes daily opening easier.
Thick fabric also stacks wider when open. Allow extra track beyond the window on each side so the stacked curtain does not cover the glass.

Cleaning velvet curtains
Vacuum velvet gently with a brush attachment every few weeks, working in the direction of the pile, to stop dust settling in. Most velvet curtains should be professionally cleaned rather than machine washed, as water and agitation can crush the pile and lined curtains may shrink unevenly. Our curtain cleaning service handles heavy and lined curtains.

Common questions
Is velvet too hot for Singapore?
Polyester velvet is comfortable in an air-conditioned room. Cotton velvet feels warmer and absorbs more moisture, so it suits drier, well-ventilated rooms.
Can velvet curtains be machine washed?
Usually not. Washing can crush the pile and distort lined curtains. Vacuum regularly and have them professionally cleaned.
Do velvet curtains need a special track?
They need a track or rod strong enough for the weight, with enough fixings along its length. We check the ceiling or wall and the curtain size at the measuring visit.
Are velvet curtains blackout?
Velvet blocks a lot of light on its own, but not all of it. Add a blackout lining if the room needs to be dark.
