How to Stop Curtains Fading in the Sun

Take down a curtain that has hung on a west-facing window for a couple of years and compare the front with the folds at the back. The exposed face is often several shades lighter, with stripes where the folds sat. In Singapore, where the sun is strong all year and many flats face the afternoon sun, curtain fading is one of the most common complaints after a few years.

You cannot stop sunlight fading fabric entirely, but you can slow it a great deal. Here is how.

Why curtains fade

Ultraviolet light breaks down the dyes in fabric. Visible light and heat add to it. Fading depends on:

  • Direction. West-facing windows get the hot afternoon sun. East-facing windows get morning sun. North and south faces get less direct light.
  • Hours drawn. A curtain kept closed against the sun all afternoon takes the full exposure.
  • Fabric. Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk tend to fade faster than polyester.
  • Colour. Strong, dark and bright colours show fading more. Navy, black, red and deep green often lighten unevenly.
  • Dye method. Fabrics dyed at the fibre stage tend to hold colour better than those printed on the surface.

How to stop curtains fading: step by step

1. Add a lining

A lining is the simplest protection. It sits between the face fabric and the window, so the glass side takes the sun. A blackout or thermal lining blocks the most light. Even a plain lining helps. Many made-to-measure curtains can have a detachable lining added, which also makes washing easier. If you are choosing between blackout and dim-out, see our guide on blackout vs dim-out curtains.

2. Use a sheer as a sacrificial layer

A day sheer hung on a track closer to the window takes the direct sun during the day, and the main curtain stays drawn back in the shade. Sheers fade too, but they are lighter and simpler to replace than a lined main curtain. This is the idea behind day and night curtains, which is a common setup in Singapore bedrooms and living rooms. See our day curtains and sheers for options.

3. Fit window film

UV-blocking window film on the glass cuts much of the UV before it reaches the room. It protects curtains, sofas, flooring and artwork at the same time, and on west-facing glass it also reduces heat and glare. Check with your management before fitting film on condo windows.

4. Choose fabrics that resist fading

When buying new curtains for a sunny window:

  1. Choose polyester or polyester blends over pure cotton, linen or silk.
  2. Ask whether the fabric is solution-dyed or rated for light fastness.
  3. Pick lighter, softer colours, which show fading less: whites, creams, greys, sand and pale neutrals.
  4. Avoid strong reds, navy and black on west-facing windows unless they are fully lined.

Our guide to curtain fabrics compares how each fabric behaves in Singapore homes.

5. Add a blind behind the curtain

A roller blind or honeycomb blind on the glass side shades the curtain during the hottest hours. Honeycomb blinds also add a layer of insulation against heat.

6. Rotate panels and change habits

  • Swap panels between windows, or left and right on the same window, once or twice a year so they fade evenly.
  • Draw curtains back fully when the sun is not on the window, so only the stacked ends face the light.
  • Close the sheer, not the main curtain, during the afternoon.

7. Wash gently

Harsh detergent, bleach and hot water strip colour too. Wash in cool water, on a gentle cycle, and dry in shade rather than direct sun. Our guide on how to wash curtains covers each fabric.

Can faded curtains be restored?

Not in a lasting way. Re-dyeing curtains at home is unreliable, especially with polyester and blends, and the result is often patchy. If fading is mild and even, turning the panels or moving them to a shadier room can give them more life. If the fabric has faded in stripes or become brittle and thin, it has also weakened, and replacement is usually the better choice.

When to call a professional

If your curtains have faded and need replacing, our made-to-measure curtains can be lined to protect the face fabric, with a sheer track in front of the window. We bring fabric samples to a home measuring visit, so you can see how colours look in your own light. For heat and UV on the glass itself, see window film.

Common questions

Do blackout curtains fade?

Yes, the face fabric can still fade, though the blackout backing takes much of the sun. Lighter colours and a sheer in front of the window help.

Which curtain colours fade the least?

Lighter neutrals such as white, cream, grey and sand show fading the least. Strong reds, navy and black tend to show fading more on sunny windows.

Does a curtain lining stop fading?

A lining reduces fading a great deal because it takes the direct sun on the glass side. It does not stop it entirely, since light still reaches the face fabric from the room and the edges.

Does window film stop curtains fading?

UV-blocking window film cuts much of the UV reaching the room, so it protects curtains and furniture. It suits west-facing windows where heat and glare are also a problem.
