Honeycomb blinds in Singapore

Honeycomb blinds, also called cellular shades, are made from pleated fabric bonded into a row of hexagonal cells. Seen from the side, the cells look like a honeycomb. The pockets of air trapped inside slow the movement of heat through the window, and the pleats stack into a slim band when the blind is raised.

How honeycomb blinds behave in Singapore

In a cold climate, honeycomb blinds are sold for keeping heat in. In Singapore, they work the other way, slowing the sun's heat from the glass into the room. On a west-facing bedroom or living room, a lowered honeycomb blind helps the aircon work less hard in the afternoon.

The fabric is usually polyester, which handles humidity well. The cells are closed tubes, though, so dust and the odd insect can collect inside, and they cannot be machine washed. In very humid rooms, keep the blind raised part of the day so air reaches the fabric.

Options to choose

Measuring and installation

Honeycomb blinds are slim when raised and sit neatly inside most window recesses, which suits HDB casement windows with limited space above the frame. Like other blinds, a small side gap remains when fitted inside the recess. They are best on standard windows rather than very wide spans.

Honeycomb blinds are quoted after measuring, since price depends on the cell type, the lift and the size. A home measuring visit with samples has a $50 deposit, credited to your order, and we price match written quotes for the same specification.

Care

Dust gently with a feather duster or a vacuum on low suction with a brush. Blow out the cells with a hairdryer on a cool setting if dust gathers inside. Spot clean marks with a damp cloth and let the blind dry fully before raising it.

Compared with nearby options

A blackout roller blind is cheaper and easier to wipe, but has less heat control and no top-down option. Roman blinds give a softer fabric fold but stack deeper. A thermal curtain gives heat control with folds of fabric, and suits wide windows better than one large honeycomb blind.

Common questions

Do honeycomb blinds keep a room cool in Singapore?

They help. The air in the cells slows heat from the glass, which suits sunny and west-facing windows.

Are honeycomb blinds blackout?

They come in light-filtering and blackout versions. Blackout cells have a lining inside the pleats.

Can I wash honeycomb blinds?

Not in a machine. Dust them, blow out the cells on a cool setting and spot clean with a damp cloth.

How much do honeycomb blinds cost?

They are quoted after measuring, since price depends on the cell type, lift and size.
