Blackout roller blinds in Singapore
A blackout roller blind is a single sheet of coated fabric that rolls up onto a tube at the top of the window. Pulled down, the fabric itself stops light passing through. It is the simplest way to darken a bedroom, nursery or media room, and it takes up very little space compared with a curtain.

Blackout fabric and edge light
The fabric blocks light, but a roller blind still leaves small gaps at the sides and at the top around the roll. How much light leaks in depends on how the blind is fitted. A blind fixed inside the window recess looks neat but leaves a gap of a few millimetres on each side. A blind fixed on the wall or ceiling and overlapping the frame cuts that leak a lot.
If you need a room that is close to fully dark, for a shift worker or a light-sensitive baby, the best results come from a blackout roller blind with a blackout curtain in front, or from side channels where the window allows. We explain the options at the home visit with your actual window in front of us.

How it copes with Singapore conditions
Blackout roller fabrics are usually polyester or fibreglass with a coated back, so they do not absorb moisture and resist mould better than most curtains. A light-coloured or white-backed fabric facing the window reflects some of the afternoon sun, which helps on a west-facing bedroom. Dark fabrics facing the glass absorb more heat.
In HDB flats, casement windows open inward or outward depending on the block. We check the handles and window swing so the blind clears them, or fix it on the wall above the frame.

Options to choose
Rooms it suits
Bedrooms, children's rooms, home cinemas and study rooms where screen glare is a problem. It is also a good choice for the room of anyone who sleeps in the day. Blackout rollers are less suited to living rooms, where you usually want daylight and a view.

Measuring, price and installation
Roller blinds are $5 to $6.50 per sq ft, installed, with a 20 sq ft minimum per blind. A home measuring visit with samples has a $50 deposit, credited to your order, and we price match written quotes for the same specification.
For a recess fit, we measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and use the narrowest. For a face fit, we add an overlap on each side to reduce light leaks. HDB windows are often wide, so we may split a long window into two or three blinds so each one stays light to operate.

Care
Wipe the fabric with a damp cloth and mild soap, and dust it with a soft brush. Do not soak or machine wash a blackout roller, since the coating can crack. Let it dry fully before rolling it up.

Common questions
Do blackout roller blinds block all light?
The fabric blocks light, but small gaps at the edges let some through. A face fit with overlap, or a blackout curtain in front, gives the darkest result.
How much do blackout roller blinds cost?
Our roller blinds are $5 to $6.50 per sq ft installed, with a 20 sq ft minimum per blind.
Do blackout roller blinds reduce heat?
Yes, a little, especially with a white or light backing facing the window to reflect sun.
Can I wash a blackout roller blind?
Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak or machine wash it, since that can damage the coating.
