Lace curtains in Singapore
Lace curtains are sheers with a pattern worked into the fabric: florals, leaves, geometric shapes or a fine border along the hem. They filter daylight like a plain sheer but add decoration, which suits classic, French-style and Peranakan-inspired interiors as well as softer modern rooms.

How lace behaves in Singapore
Most lace sold for homes today is polyester, which handles humidity well. It dries fast, keeps its shape and does not shrink much in a cold wash. Cotton lace has a softer, older look but absorbs moisture, creases and can shrink, so it needs more care in a flat with the windows open.
The pattern matters for light. Dense motifs throw a shadow pattern across the floor in strong sun and give a little more privacy than a plain voile. Open, airy designs let more light and air through. On a west-facing window, a pale lace still lets heat in, so pair it with a lined curtain if the room gets hot in the afternoon.

Types of lace
Colours and headings
White and ivory are the classic choices, and ivory tends to look softer against warm wood and cream walls. Champagne, grey and beige laces suit darker furniture. Bring the lace samples to the window at the home visit, because a pattern that looks busy on the table often looks lighter against daylight.
Pencil pleat and pinch pleat headings suit lace well, because the gathered folds show the pattern in a traditional way. Ripple fold gives a more contemporary look but spreads the pattern flatter. Eyelet works on a decorative rod.

Measuring, price and installation
Lace is priced as a sheer, from $45 to $60 per metre of track width, installed. Patterned lace sometimes needs a little extra fabric so the motif lines up across panels, which we account for when we measure. A home measuring visit with samples has a $50 deposit, credited to your order. HDB curtain packages start from $378 if you are fitting out a whole flat.
Lace is usually hung on the track nearest the window, with the main curtain on the room side. We check the hem length against your floor finish so the lace clears the floor and does not pick up dust.

Care
Wash polyester lace cold on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag, so the pattern does not snag. Avoid bleach, which weakens the fibres, and rehang while slightly damp. Embroidered and cotton lace may be better cleaned professionally.

Common questions
Are lace curtains old-fashioned?
Not necessarily. Border lace and fine geometric patterns suit modern rooms, while floral lace suits classic and heritage-style interiors.
Do lace curtains give privacy?
In daylight, yes, especially denser patterns. At night with lights on, pair them with a heavier curtain.
How do I wash lace curtains?
Most polyester lace can be machine washed cold in a laundry bag on a gentle cycle, then rehung damp. Check your care label.
Can lace be used with blackout curtains?
Yes. Lace on the window-side track and blackout on the room side is a common day and night set.
