Bamboo blinds in Singapore

Bamboo blinds are made from thin strips or reeds of natural bamboo, woven together with cotton or synthetic thread. They filter light into a warm, dappled glow and bring texture that suits tropical, Bali-style, Japandi and resort-inspired homes. They are sometimes called bamboo curtains, though they hang and lift like a blind.

How bamboo behaves in Singapore

Bamboo is a natural material, and Singapore humidity is its main challenge. In a dry, airy, indoor room, a sealed bamboo blind stays in good shape. In a damp corner, a bathroom or an exposed balcony, it can grow mould spots, darken or loosen at the weave. Rain driven onto the blind is the most common cause of damage.

Strong sun slowly fades and dries natural bamboo, so a west-facing blind changes colour faster than a shaded one. That ageing is part of the look for many people, but it is uneven if the blind is always half down in the same place.

Weave and slat sizeFine reeds give a tighter weave and more privacy. Wider slats look bolder and let more light through.

LiningA privacy or dim-out lining behind the bamboo stops people seeing in at night and protects the weave from sun.

Privacy at night

Unlined bamboo lets light and shapes through the gaps in the weave. In the day this gives privacy from a distance, but at night with lights on, people outside can see in. If the blind is in a bedroom or faces another block, ask for a lining, or pair it with a curtain.

Measuring and installation

Bamboo blinds are quoted after measuring, since price depends on the weave, the lift style and any lining. A home measuring visit with samples has a $50 deposit, credited to your order. Bamboo is heavier than most fabric blinds and forms a thick roll or stack when raised, so we check the space above the window and how far the stack will cover the glass.

Care

Dust or vacuum gently with a brush. Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and let the blind dry fully in an airy room. Do not soak or hose bamboo. Raise it fully on rainy days if it is near an open window.

Compared with nearby options

Wooden venetian blinds give a similar natural warmth with adjustable slats and more precise light control. Linen-look roller blinds give a soft natural texture with easier care and better moisture resistance. Outdoor zip blinds are the practical choice for a balcony open to rain.

Common questions

Are bamboo blinds suitable for Singapore weather?

Indoors, in dry and airy rooms, yes. Keep them out of rain and steam, which can cause mould and loosen the weave.

Do bamboo blinds give privacy?

Unlined bamboo gives privacy by day from a distance but shows shapes at night. A lining gives full privacy.

Can bamboo blinds be used outdoors?

Only in fully covered spots that stay dry. For balconies exposed to rain, outdoor zip blinds last longer.

How much do bamboo blinds cost?

They are quoted after measuring, since price depends on the weave, lift style and lining.
