Curtains and blinds for landed homes

A terrace, semi-D or bungalow usually has more of everything than a flat. There may be five or six bedrooms over three floors, a double-height living room, a long staircase window and a patio that opens to the garden. Each room faces a different direction, so the attic bedroom bakes in the afternoon while the ground floor stays shaded. Curtains SG plans curtains and blinds for every room in the house, then measures, makes and installs them.

Double-height and very tall windows

Curtains in a double-height living room can drop five metres or more. At that length the fabric is heavy, so we use a sturdier track with more brackets, and we often suggest a lighter sheer or a linen-look polyester that hangs straight without pulling the track down. S-fold (ripple fold) curtains keep the folds even over a long drop. Pinch pleat suits a more traditional living room.

Measuring tall windows needs access, so tell us the ceiling height when you book and we will bring a suitable ladder. Hems are finished to clear the floor slightly, because a long curtain that drags picks up dust and mould in Singapore's humidity.

Staircase and awkward windows

Staircase windowsA window halfway up a stairwell is hard to reach. A motorised roller blind, or a fixed sheer that stays in place, avoids leaning over the railing.Learn more →
High clerestory windowsNarrow windows near the ceiling can let in harsh morning light. Motorised blinds are the practical choice here, since a chain would hang several metres long.

Corner and bay windowsCorner windows can take two tracks meeting at the corner or separate blinds per pane. We check the frames on site before suggesting either.

Outdoor zip blinds for patios and porches

A patio or back porch facing the garden gets afternoon sun and sideways rain during a storm. Outdoor zip blinds run in side channels that hold the fabric edges, so the blind stays steadier in wind than a loose roller blind. Mesh fabrics cut sun and glare while you can still see the garden. Solid fabrics give more shelter from rain.

Zip blinds on a wide patio are often motorised, because a large outdoor blind is heavy to wind by hand. Tell us early if you want this, so the electrician can plan an outdoor-rated power point.

Zip blinds also suit a car porch that doubles as a sitting area, or a side passage where rain blows in. We look at the posts, beams and ceiling of the porch on site, because the blind needs solid fixing points at the top and along both side channels.

Planning room by room

Motorised tracks and blinds across several floors

Motorisation helps most in landed homes, with high windows, long tracks and many rooms. You can group blinds by floor or room and run them from a wall switch, remote or phone app. Wired motors need power points near each track or blind, so plan them with your renovation contractor before the ceilings and walls are finished. Rechargeable motors are an option for blinds where adding wiring is difficult.

If you are not renovating, motorising a few key windows first, such as the double-height living room and the staircase, often covers the windows that are hardest to use by hand. Other rooms can stay manual.

Common questions

Can you make curtains for a double-height living room?

Yes. We measure the full drop on site and use a track and brackets suited to the weight of a long curtain. Lighter sheers or linen-look fabrics hang better at very long lengths.

Should I motorise the curtains on high windows?

For windows you cannot reach from the floor, motorisation is usually the most practical choice. It needs power near the track, so plan it during renovation if possible.

Are outdoor zip blinds suitable for a patio?

Yes. The side channels hold the fabric edges, which keeps the blind steadier in wind than a standard roller blind. Mesh fabric cuts glare while keeping the view, and solid fabric gives more rain protection.

Can you do every window in the house in one project?

Yes. We plan curtains and blinds room by room so the house looks consistent, and fit them in one installation where the schedule allows.

Which blinds suit bathrooms in a landed house?

Aluminium or faux wood venetian blinds cope better with steam than real wood. A roller blind in moisture-resistant fabric is another option.
